Kuala Lumpur, 8th December 2023 – Beginning next year, policemen will be equipped with bodyworn cameras (BWCs) in their operations.
The move, mooted in 2021, is set to herald a significant shift in the transparency of police operations.
Deputy Home Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said, efforts to get BWCs for enforcement agencies were in the final stages and that the devices were expected to be fully used next year.
He said the BWCs would only be used by the police for now.
“The use of BWCs is also part of efforts to improve the ministry’s integrity level.
“The use of BWCs will enhance the police’s quality of service to the people.
“Its use in other agencies will be considered later.” He said this in reply to a supplementary question from Senator Tuan Hj. Hussin Ismail in the Dewan Negara yesterday on the BWC procurement and matters pertaining to their use, including data collection and management, as well as privacy issues for police officers.
